The Power of Accountability: A Leader’s Journey to Personal and Collective Growth

In the world of leadership, there’s a skill that often goes unnoticed but holds the power to transform both individuals and teams. It’s the skill of managing accountability, and in the words of Stephen Covey, “Accountability is the cornerstone of integrity and the pathway to personal and collective growth.” As a leader and coach with over a decade of experience, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing the profound impact that accountability can have on personal and collective development. 💡 Personal Journey

My journey as a leader and coach began more than 12 years ago. Starting as a project manager, I discovered a passion for people and psychology through personal development and books. It was during my tenure as a Lead Project Manager that I began coaching project managers within my department. This experience ignited my interest in coaching, leading me to become an ICF certified coach and establish my own coaching business, Coaching & Evolution. Today, I coach leaders and IT professionals in career improvement, performance enhancement, and work-life balance, and I also provide tailored coaching programs for corporations.

My transition into leadership wasn’t a deliberate choice but rather a natural progression. My organizational skills and results-oriented approach helped me inspire and lead people. Becoming a coach, on the other hand, was a conscious decision driven by a deep passion for helping others grow and evolve. My experience in software development leadership naturally led me to focus on coaching leaders and IT professionals, where I could combine my love for people and my expertise in the field.

💡 Challenges and Transformation

As both a leader and a coach, I’ve encountered the challenges related to accountability. While leadership often involves the responsibility of managing accountability for teams, coaching empowers individuals to take control of their own accountability. This shift has been transformative. In my leadership role, I initially had to resort to frequent follow-ups, reminders, and explanations to ensure accountability. In a team, when everyone is accountable for their actions and the team’s success, it strengthens their unity and encourages mutual support and respect. In Agile methodologies, accountability becomes even more critical, as the team’s performance is collective, and success or failure is shared.

Without accountability, little progress can be achieved, both in personal and professional life. Leaders who understand how to manage this skill within themselves and their teams save time and reduce stress.

💡 Coaching Success

One powerful example of using coaching to manage accountability effectively comes from my leadership role. Each quarter, we faced the challenge of delivering department and engineering unit initiatives. With a department of 70 people, it was essential to maximize efficiency. We followed a structured process to assign accountability. The leaders within the department, including team managers and team leaders, would select the initiatives they wanted to be accountable for, and this cascaded down to individual team members.

The initiatives became their objectives during coaching sessions, and regular team meetings allowed us to review progress, provide support, and share insights. At the end of the quarter, we conducted three review meetings, ensuring accountability flowed seamlessly from top to bottom. This approach not only ensured the accomplishment of our goals but also encouraged personal and collective growth.

To foster a culture of accountability within your organization or team, several strategies are crucial:

  • Vision: Communicate a clear vision to team members, helping them understand the bigger picture and how their work contributes to it.
  • Values: Establish common values that create a sense of belonging and respect among team members.

  • Recognition: Recognize and appreciate team members’ efforts and successes, reinforcing their accountability.
  • Support and Learning: Create an environment where individuals are encouraged to grow and learn, viewing accountability as a tool for improvement, not punishment.

💡Common Misconceptions and Challenges

Leaders often face challenges related to accountability. Some leaders may take too much responsibility for their teams, while others may distance themselves from accountability. The key is to find a balance—know when to protect your team and when to empower them with accountability. It’s crucial to foster an Agile and growth-oriented mindset that unites the team and encourages continuous improvement.

💡Inspiring Accountability

One of the most inspiring stories from my journey involves taking the leap to dedicate myself full-time to my coaching business. Leaving behind a secure corporate job was both daunting and exhilarating. I felt accountable not only to myself but also to my team. To overcome this challenge, I meticulously planned my exit, ensuring a smooth transition for my colleagues. By assuming accountability for my own future, I left in good standing with my former employer and embarked on a new chapter in my career.
