This article aims to connect readers emotionally with my personal story, bridging the gap between vulnerability and the actionable steps towards enhanced emotional intelligence. The journey promises not only professional growth but a profound transformation that resonates in both personal and leadership spheres.

💡 Bridging the Gap: My Vulnerable Journey through Difficult Conversations and Emotional Intelligence

Growing up in a conflict-ridden environment shaped my early perceptions of difficult conversations. The pattern I inherited dictated that conflict was a personal attack, leading to victimization and even aggression. This pattern followed me into my professional life, particularly in managerial roles.

As the manager of a department, I found it challenging to provide constructive feedback and address areas for improvement effectively. My reluctance to have difficult conversations stemmed from a fear of making others feel bad. However, this reluctance hindered clear communication, impeding the growth of my team.

Realizing the need for change, I embarked on a journey of self-discovery and growth. I learned that separating the behavior from the person and formulating speeches to address specific actions, rather than individuals, was crucial. I cultivated the art of open listening, understanding the importance of my requests, and staying firm in my expectations. Embracing empathy, I began allowing others to process their emotions naturally, a crucial step in navigating the complexities of human interactions.

This transformation not only enhanced my leadership skills but also garnered respect and trust from both my team and the organization. Clear communication became a cornerstone of my leadership style, resulting in positive outcomes for the team.

💡 Shifting Towards Emotional Intelligence through a journey of Self-Discovery

As I embarked on my journey toward emotional intelligence, I stumbled upon this path unconsciously, guided by a genuine curiosity about coaching. Little did I know that this curiosity would open the floodgates to a profound and, at times, challenging process of self-discovery.

The initial belief that I was “okay” was a shield, a veneer of toxic positivism that I wore to conceal the layers of emotions I had buried within. Engaging in coaching sessions, I soon found that beneath the surface, there were unresolved issues and deep-seated emotions waiting to be acknowledged.

The shift from coaching to therapy was a decision triggered not only by professional curiosity but also by personal circumstances. It was during this period that I faced some of the most difficult events in my life, events that shattered the facade of perpetual happiness I had constructed.

The journey through therapy was not a walk in the park; it was a tumultuous battle between my true self and the persona I had created. Anxiety and sleepless nights became my companions as I grappled with the conflict between authenticity and the desire to maintain the status quo.

In the embrace of therapy, I discovered the power of acceptance. It was not about fighting against my true self; rather, it was about navigating and understanding the intricate web of emotions that had been woven throughout my life. The therapist became a guide, helping me navigate the storm of emotions rather than trying to silence it.

This period was undoubtedly the most challenging in my life, but it was also the most transformative.

The journey toward emotional intelligence became a conscious effort to accept, rather than resist, my emotions. It was a journey from denial to acknowledgment, from toxic positivism to genuine self-discovery. This phase laid the foundation for the subsequent steps in my emotional intelligence journey, emphasizing the importance of acceptance and vulnerability in the pursuit of true understanding.

💡 Orchestrating Growth: Harmonizing the Five Steps of Emotional Intelligence with Career Evolution

As I navigated the intricate journey of emotional intelligence, the five steps outlined by Daniel Goleman—self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills—began to intricately weave into the fabric of my professional evolution.

Self-Awareness: A Beacon in the Abyss

The journey commenced with self-awareness acting as a guiding beacon. Recognizing the toll of burnout, I shifted my focus towards prioritizing well-being. This pivotal step allowed me to understand my emotions, paving the way for a transformative shift in perspective.

Self-Regulation: Crafting a Symphony of Emotional Harmony

Self-regulation followed suit, as I delved into practices such as journaling, mindfulness, and self-compassion. These techniques became the notes in a symphony, orchestrating a melodious balance in my emotional landscape. The newfound ability to regulate my responses cultivated a healthier and more thoughtful approach to both work and life.

I was now working on a project that allowed me to take some other responsibilities aside and be more department oriented. Started taking over department staffing, interviews, department initiatives.

Motivation: A Resonant Melody of Self-Love

Motivation surged forth as I embraced self-love and prioritized personal and professional growth. This newfound motivation wasn’t merely about career advancement; it became a resonant melody that echoed through my interactions, sparking a renewed passion for understanding myself and those around me.

Empathy: The Heartbeat of Meaningful Connections

The stage was set for empathy to take center stage. Consciously empathizing with colleagues and clients became more than a skill; it transformed into the heartbeat of meaningful connections. Understanding their experiences and struggles created a profound bond that transcended mere professional relationships.

While I was feeling better and more confident I had the surprise to see that people that went through similar things were approaching me and asking me how I did it.

I started to become consciously empathetic and have a different response and actions towards people around me.

Not long after that the opportunity to become Head of Project Management Office arises. After discussing some clear boundaries that would help me sustain the new me I took the role.

It was then, when I had people in charge, when I realized how much I like working with people and how passionate I became about understanding them, studying human behavior, psychology, and coaching.

As the department grew a lot I became Senior engineering Manager for the Program Management Department and besides that, during the pandemic, I started the coaching school and became an ICF certified coach.

Social Skills: Building a Harmonious Ensemble

The final movement brought social skills into play. The ability to create and nurture authentic connections with colleagues and clients became instrumental in resolving conflicts and fostering an environment of open communication. These skills weren’t just tools for professional success; they became the building blocks of a harmonious ensemble, shaping the dynamics of my workplace.

While going through this phase I started my coaching business and became an entrepreneur while still working as the Manager of Program Management Department. One year after that I decided I am strong enough, motivated and passionate to dedicate myself entirely to what I actually love to do, helping people.

In essence, the journey through the five steps of emotional intelligence mirrored the phases of my career. It wasn’t a linear progression; instead, it was a symphonic composition where each step harmonized with the notes of professional growth. The evolution was palpable, marking a transformative process that resonated not only within me but also in the very fabric of my career journey.
